Noma Bar's design

Noma Bar

Prolific and iconic, designer Noma Bar has built his career on a simple premise: say more with less. The allure of Bar’s approach is his ability to communicate complex ideas using minimal visual elements. In addition to his many awards and accomplishments, he maintains an impressive portfolio of work produced for publications such as The New Yorker, The Guardian, The New York Times, Time Out London, GQ, and The Economist and advertisers such as Apple, Coca-Cola, Rolls Royce, and Mercedes.

Ben Wiseman's design

Ben Wiseman

Ben Wiseman’s bright, graphic, and minimal illustrations are designed to engage and draw attention. A graduate of Parson’s School of Design, Wiseman has produced covers for TIME and Newsweek magazines. With a style that is consistently clever, funny, and visually engaging, it’s no surprise that the young designer’s work has garnered such attention.

Anna Parini's design

Anna Parini

Drawing inspiration from the conceptual, socio-political illustrations accompanying the New York Times Op Eds, combined with elements of Pop Art, Parini has developed a style that is strong and sophisticated, with a unique and evocative sensitivity. Her notable list of clients includes The New Yorker, The New York Times, Vogue, The Guardian, Penguin Random House, and Apple.

Scotiabank Giller Prize

We’re very proud to celebrate the very best in Canadian fiction, through our sponsorship of the Scotiabank Giller Prize.  In 2021, Omar El Akkad has been named the winner for his novel, What Strange Paradise, published by McClelland & Stewart, taking home $100,000 courtesy of Scotiabank.

Of the winning book, the jury wrote: Amid all the anger and confusion surrounding the global refugee crisis, Omar El Akkad’s What Strange Paradise paints a portrait of displacement and belonging that is at once unflinching and tender. In examining the confluence of war, migration and a sense of settlement, it raises questions of indifference and powerlessness and, ultimately, offers clues as to how we might reach out empathetically in a divided world.

Hot Docs

Scotia Wealth Management is proud to be the Presenting Platinum Sponsor of the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Hot Docs is North America’s largest documentary festival, offering an outstanding selection of over 200 films from Canada and around the world to Toronto audiences.

With the Big Ideas Series presented by Scotia Wealth Management, our Volunteer Program, and founding support of Docs for Schools, we’re delighted to support this world class documentary festival.

The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival

Each May, The Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival enlivens the Toronto area with a month-long celebration of contemporary photography. The Festival has shown over 1,000 local, national and international photographers at more than 200 venues. As the largest photography event in the world, Scotiabank CONTACT stimulates excitement and discussion among an audience of over 1.5 million.

Scotiabank Photography Award

The Scotiabank Photography Award is the largest annual peer-reviewed celebration of excellence in Canadian contemporary photography. Designed to raise the international profile of established Canadian photographic artists, the short list is announced every March in Toronto.

The winner is announced in May during the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.

In 2021, Deanna Bowen of Montreal was the winner of the 11th annual Scotiabank Photography Award.

"Deanna's deeply personal connection to her art – in particular her photography – immerses the viewer in a brilliantly potent documentation of genealogy, race, and migration in Canada," says Edward Burtynsky, co-founder of the Scotiabank Photography Award and Chair of the jury.
